In the real world the journey of waste biomass to a useable biofuel is quite an obstacle course. Getting round, under and over each obstacle is what makes us tick.
Our ultimate goal is just that - waste & biomass derived fuels. On the way there, however, we will need some smaller, easier steps. These will be commercial projects delivering power, heat and heating fuels.
Developing our own propositions brings up all the barriers others face: securing feedstocks, legislation, commercial viability, market acceptability and offtakes, technical readiness, planning, financing etc.

2G BioPOWER is focusing mainly on thermochemical conversion of waste as a first step. Gasification and pyrolysis can now be delivered at a commercial scale. However both currently require large scale production to support conversion / upgrading of output products to hydrocarbon fuels.
The syngas and pyrolysis oil produced may, however, be used for a range of applications including heat, power, production of materials and simple liquid fuels such as bio-methanol. These are 2G BioPOWER's intermediate goals.
However, once supply chains are in place and commercial production of intermediate products underway, the foundations of volume 'advanced' biofuels will have been established.
'Drop in' hydrocarbon biofuels would overcome adverse reactions to high ethanol content and the 'blend walls' currently arising for both technical and legal reasons. However in the short term, as well as heat and power, biofuels such as bio-methanol, ethanol, bio-MTBE, ETBE can be produced.
Some manufacturers have not endorsed blends greater than 10% ethanol, resulting in mixed public support in some countries. However one does wonder how viewpoints would change if Formula One World Champion, Sebastian Vettel, had been running his Red Bull on E85!
Fortunately motor sport governing body, the FIA, have seen the light and from 2012 fuels from biomass are allowed within the technical regulations. It's just a shame they’re not compulsory, but we do aim to stick 100% biofuel in an F1 car one day and add some sex appeal, after all “energy” deserves to be energised!
